Latinos were among the driving forces behind President Donald Trump’s return to office, but that support is eroding as they struggle with higher prices for gasoline, food, healthcare and housing, according to a new poll. The bipartisan survey released Wednesday by UnidosUS finds more Latino voters disapprove of Trump’s job performance amid growing economic strain and frustration that lawmakers are not responding to their concerns.

The new poll of 3,000 registered Latino voters nationally, conducted April 27 through May 14 of this year, finds 67% now disapprove of the job Trump is doing, with 84% concerned Congress is failing to fulfill its role as a check on his power. A UnidosUS poll conducted in April 2025 found 59% disapproved of the president and how the Republican Party was handling its leadership of Congress.

As it has been for years, the cost of living remains Latino voters’ top concern, according to the poll. Sixty percent of those surveyed said their top priority for elected officials is that they address the cost of basic living expenses such as food and gas. About 40% want to see more action on wages and job creation; 37% on healthcare costs, including premiums and medications; and 27% on housing and electricity costs.

“These are not abstract policy preferences,” the nonpartisan Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization wrote in a statement accompanying the poll results. “These are kitchen table breaking points.”

Latinos are not alone in their sentiment. A pair of consumer surveys from the Conference Board and the University of Michigan in recent days found consumer sentiment declining among most Americans amid high inflation and gas costs.

Inflation increased to an annual rate of 3.8% in April as the Iran war increased prices on fuel and food. The national average for a gallon of gasoline was $4.49 on Monday, according to AAA — 40 cents more than a month earlier and over 50% more than before the Iran war began.

About two-thirds (66%) of Latino voters say Trump and congressional Republicans are not focused on fixing the economy, with 68% saying the country is headed in the wrong direction and 52% saying they expect the Trump administration’s economic policies to leave them worse off over the next 12 months.

The main drivers of Trump’s falling support among Latinos: inflation (44%), immigration enforcement (33%), job and wage stagnation (26%), and the war in Iran (25%).

“Latino voters are not just disappointed — they are connecting the dots between this administration’s policies and the economic pain they feel every single day,” UnidosUS said in a statement.

Democrats, however, are underperforming in a UnidosUS generic ballot compared with 2024, with a plurality of Latino voters saying they are more motivated to support their community than the candidates.

Then-Vice President Kamala Harris won the Latino vote in the 2024 presidential election with 59%, compared with 39% who voted for Trump. But her support was largely among older Latino voters. Trump won 56% of the vote among Latino males between the ages of 18 and 39, compared with 42% who voted for Harris.

Of the Latino voters who cast a ballot for Trump in 2024, 25% in the new poll said they would not vote for him if they could re-cast their ballot — up from 9% who said so in April 2025 and 13% in November 2025.

“President Trump was honored to receive a record level of support from Hispanic Americans that helped fuel his landslide 2024 election victory, and he’s spent every day since his inauguration working to make life better for them, and all Americans,” White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster told Spectrum News in a statement.

“From passing the largest middle-class tax cuts in American history, including No Tax on Tips, Overtime, and Social Security, to defeating Biden’s inflation crisis, hardworking Hispanic Americans are beginning to have some breathing room after four years of economic pain under the Democrats,” she said. “There’s much more work to do, which is why President Trump and Republicans in Congress will continue fighting to make everyday life more affordable for working families.”

The Latino electorate is the nation’s second largest voting age population, according to UnidosUS. Its new poll found that 76% of those surveyed said they are either 100% certain or almost certain to vote this November.

FINAL COMMENT

As tax breaks for the middle class appear to be a GOD SENT from this administration remember there are no free lunches. Increase tax payments for reducing the deficit will need to come from somewhere and now the cost of incarcerating innocent immigrants will cost us all down the road. You can bet the upper 1% will not be helping proportionately. Whatever tax they pay will not put them in debt, but it will the middle class. Most families are not working at a livable wage and cannot afford to pay for their basic physiological needs. (Food, shelter, sleep, rest, clean cool or warm air, homeóstasis, reproduction). While Latino voters saying they are more motivated to support their community than the candidates, they must remember taxes will never go away.

HPLA Charities is trying to ensure everyone has their basic physiological needs met. Will you help? www.hplacgarities.org/donate
