Week of June 20, 2016-Blight Reduction

This week we move forward knowing many Fathers had no family or no friends to celebrate with last weekend. There is much effort expended to reach out to those who have out-lived all their friends and family. In the same light I see so many seniors who are widowed or divorced and have little resources to maintain their dignity. Reading  through the list of those in need it is hard to prioritize which class is most important. For Habitaciones Para Latinos Association we are focusing on the latino community who falls at or below the poverty level. Our expertise in home repair and handyman services are vital to all those in need who own their own home and are struggling to maintain it. Currently we are working with three high priority properties who all need roof repair. This is one of the most expensive areas for the home owner to maintain and home owners insurance is a luxury for these folks in need and unaffordable.

We are currently having a long dry, hot spell in this area so leaky roofs are prime for repair and must be done quickly as when the rains come they come will come with a vengeance.

So, what is your priority when it comes to helping others. Has your employer talked you into a payroll deduction for the United Way. They are a wonderful charity and have a positive impact on many projects but little money trickles down to an SSI recipient with Leukemia who is trying to rebuild her home which has become uninhabitable. The cost of operating some of these big charities, some of which are paying huge salaries to executives and lobbyists are not trickling down to these individuals who are forced to jump through hoops to get help. Many of these folks have no idea help is available much less have the ability to work through the process while trying to sustain their health and other basic physiological day-to-day needs. (i.e. food, shelter).

What can you do as an individual? From the Internal Revenue Service to Habitaciones Para Latinos Association I quote the following:

“We’re pleased to tell you we determined you’re exempt from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c) (3). Donors can deduct contributions they make to you under IRC section 170. You’re also qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests , devises, transfers or gifts under section 2055, 2106, or 2522.”

Please know that all contributions received will go directly to help those in need and the cost of maintaining and operating HPLA will be done with profits earned and created by D&R Services, Inc. a for profit company which dedicates 90+ percent of all its profit to support HPLA.

Week of June 13, 2016-Tradgety Rears its Ugly Head

The tragedy in Orlando, Fl. is already known to almost everyone in the world. Events such as this one are common place in everyday life. In most large cities gun violence takes life everyday. The number of deaths keep getting larger and in Orlando the number of deaths reached a historical high for a mass shooting. There is no end in sight and unless we become prisoners of our own environment armed and on  guard duty 24/7 no one can be truly safe. To that point even our most secure facilities have been breached.

We can do more than pray. That is the best place to start but, this invisible spirit we call God, I believe, will never condone murder or sacrifice in any since of the word in today’s societies. Spiritual leaders must be convinced that any interpretation of the word of GOD that suggests you take lives is WRONG!! Let God do his/her own judging. Let God bring down the evil doers. Let God take charge. Let God bring his own army to earth and straighten us all out. God does not need humans to pass judgement on our society or on any individual. To suggest God has called you to be an executioner is to believe you are above all others in this world. There is no such person. You are not that worthy.

My prayer is that we as human beings hold each other sacred and that religion become an instrument to guide us down an individual path of righteousness, respecting the rights and thoughts of others without conflict.

There is so much pain caused by uncontrollable circumstances such as birth defects and brain injury that managing those sorts of issues should be enough to distract differences between ideologies.

At HPLA (Habitaciones Para Latinos Association) we are working hard to make life better for those who may not have the resources to take care of themselves through no fault of there own.

Join us by sending a tax deductible contribution through our donate button above or by mail to:

This week we have an electrical issue which must be corrected so power can be established to a Hispanic family whose mother has cancer and father is without work. We are also working to clear code violations for a women with three kids on a property which will end up being their home. Currently they are in temporary housing an safe but to move into their own home and begin the rebuilding will be a true blessing for them and the community around them.

Week of June 5, 2016-The Needs Just Keep Coming

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County & the City Kansas City Kansas is routinely moving forward with efforts to do more to help the needy. A gathering of neighborhood directors and the leaders of the department of Livable Neighborhoods is tentatively scheduled for the end of June. As a volunteer organization “Habitaciones Para Latinos Association” will be there. We will call and encourage all leaders in the community to attend. The focus of this meeting is home repair as that seems to be one of the greatest needs among the aging population. Basic needs which have been provided by HPLA include water leaks, appliance repair, drain pipe issues, faucet replacement and currently a shower enclosure and water control plumbing replacement. The results of these same tasks to several residents has greatly improved conditions in the home and saved lots of money for the tenants. The facts however is that resources to help those in the greatest of need are just not there. In one example a total roof replacement is desperately needed  but major project help is not readily available and the waiting list insurmountable. One idea we have is to pool resources and save up for at least one major project per month using volunteer groups. But, major projects can run upwards of $5,000.00 to complete even with an all volunteer work force.

As always we call on our friends and neighbors to help with the financial needs. For those who read our message please consider prioritizing your gifts to the grass root charities in your area. Also please consider those whom you feel a need to help in our community.

Aside: We love animals and I hate the thought of litters and litters of feral cats taking up space and resources to a point where more facilities are needing to be built. The end result is the donations going to those projects could be going to help our own fellow human beings which have much more difficulty surviving than wild cats. The pictures of abused animals can be advertised but not the living conditions of some folks in your city. Hummmm.

Our efforts to gain support will continue and we will try to do all we can on our own with our own resources but, please know that a small contribution from several of you reading this message can make a huge difference. If you want accountability of your donation please write to us or email us with your contribution amount. There is phone numbers and contact information on the home page of this site. We will respond directly to you. http://www.habitacionesparalatinos.org

Week of May 23, 2016-Looking to Add Resources to Provide Greater Support

As we begin another week we go forward trying to continue our mission. There is a big void in available resources due, mostly, to lack of understanding and in some cases lack of interest. We are making every effort to tell our story to as many folks as possible. The intention is to bring attention to the people of our community which are in need. As we have demonstrated through previous publications and as is commonly known, there are families in dire need of help. Some just temporarily and others permanently.

Our goal is to expand our outreach to other communities surrounding the Kansas City Metropolitan Area but currently we have been able to only provide limited help to Kansas City Kansas and Wyandotte County. As donations and other resources become available we will work hard to reach everyone eligible for our support.

Folks like UPS has set up a work day where volunteers from one of there facilites will help do things to help the non-profit organizations. This takes tremendous planning since projects in the works don’t always have funding available to take full advantage of this great resource when it becomes available. Volunteers are the backbone of any non-profit.

At this time of the year when weather allows for outdoor activity; attention to jobs that can only be done in fair weather become a high priority. Trash hauling, tree trimming, exterior  painting, roof replacement, roof repair, window work and wood rot removal all are things which those in need have issues with. One eight hour day from a volunteer can accomplish so much when teamed up with the resources necessary for the fix.  One of the greatest assets are the professional tradesmen that can manage and direct a team of volunteers to insure the job gets down properly. Nothing is more discouraging than to find sheet rock in place before electrical circuits are run  or junction boxes installed and especially when no insulation was hung. Many times these folks require they be paid. Understandingly so. They are in great demand. Try finding a second story painter or a tree trimmer also in high demand.

Habitaciones Para Latinos Association has the mission to help those in need and we have tried to insure a Latino family does not fall through the cracks. To date the Latino community remains one of cultures less likely to ask for help. We search for them and ask the community to bring them to our attention. In the mean time we do not turn down anyone that has a need. When HPLA has resources and time to address them we do. It is through your generous contributions, the volunteers and the spiritual support we get that keep us going.  Please don’t hesitate to lend your support to our cause and keep our grassroots efforts alive and well for the sake of Kansas City and its surrounding communities. One dollar can make such a huge difference for a person in need.

Do you need help? Do you know someone who could really use some help? Let us know. Call or e-mail or write please. Our contact form can be found at:

Week of may 16, 2016

Wow, so much to catch up on. In a spur of the moment opportunity “Habitaciones Para Latinos Association” board chairmen found himself in Frankfurt, Germany. An opportunity to meet and connect with fellow Latinos from all over the world. And so it was. From our home country of Spain to South America, Central America & Mexico. We discussed the needs of the global economy and how to keep building a cooperative spirit among all of God’s people and to make a special effort to help and promote the Latino culture which impacts every part of our world.

On returning home the needs are exacerbated and saving a home from abandonment and destruction becomes a huge struggle for one family. The City of Kansas City Kansas and the neighborhood associations work diligently with limited resources to provide help for those in need. Habitaciones Para Latinos Association had five projects wished on us to provide simple and easily accomplished relief along with one expensive and difficult project that require specialists and plenty of money to complete. We have accepted the challenge with faith that resources will become available.

One easy project was to snake out a kitchen drain which has gotten clogged due to crease being poured down the kitchen drain by a retired security officer with little outside help or income. Teaching, training and reminding that grease left over from frying fish or other food should be disposed of in a non flammable or non breakable container and disposed of properly. Not poured down the kitchen drain where it hardens in the p-traps of modern household drain systems. Thank goodness for ABS and 25′ snakes driven by a battery-powered hand drills. We got the system flowing but it but, it won’t last long before the problem returns if you keep pouring hot grease down the kitchen sink drain. (Aside: Enzyme drain treatments are great to help clear out the pipes the rest of the way but requires the patience and understanding of growing plants, raising children or maintaining a pet. It is a fine process but should be done, especially in these situations. Liquid or powdered drain treatments with acids most often do not work).

Leaking pipes seems to be a problem for everybody in the world and when resources are limited; the leaky faucet or toilet tank are too often overlooked and the water bill just climbs. One or two dollars more a month on the water bill sometimes is easier to afford than a $39.00 flush valve or even a $150.00 kitchen faucet. So if charitable organizations are helping pay utilities, investing in a new overhaul kit for the needy is cheap at any price. One lady was capturing up to 10 gallons of water a day in her bath tub before we were able to put $20.00 worth of parts and stop the leak all together. The sink in the bathroom was leaking also and that was fixed with $4.95 worth of parts. Yes, I know where you are going with this. The labor to get a plumber is astronomical. Yes it is and “Habitaciones Para Latinos Associations” provides the labor to those in need at no charge at all. How is this possible? It is only possible by the charities working together and sharing the gifts and donations made by you.

I have been on the soap box for some time concerning the need to donate to local charities and watch what your money is truly being used for. So many of the great and wonderful charities known around the world can often lose track of where the needs really are and where the contributions, by you, truly go.

If you want to know where your donations are being used in our organizations we will tell you that they are going directly to the needy of in our neighborhoods in Wyandotte County Kansas the City of Kansas City Kansas.

Week of May 2, 2016

The week has started out fast and furious with plenty of activity and much to do. We continue to search & seek out help for an elderly couple to get help with roof issues and leaks into the house. Back taxes are always a problem since most organizations restrict helping home owners who are behind on their taxes although the county has programs to help setup payment programs and that is helpful. All to often and in this case the homeowner was not aware of that support. The condition of the home may not have deteriorated so much had they known sooner. The least we can do is add tarps or plastic sheeting to stave off the rain until more permanent repairs can be afforded.

In other news Habitaciones Para Latinos Association has acquired a hard working Latino willing to donate time and or work for a discounted rate in our effort to help those in need. His qualifications seem limitless and his energy high. So far he has done some landscaping and yard work. Cleaned out gutters and did some cement work. It is so refreshing to see folks willing to get their hands dirty and do so much good. He is employed full time and will help us in the evening and weekends.

We referenced the Shepard’s Center of KCK in another publication concerning their Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast to raise funds to help their efforts. We are helping by advertising the event. It will be held at the Kansas City Kansas Community Collage at 7535  State Ave, Kansas City, KS. May 7, 2016. 8-11 AM. One of the first building when entering the campus off State Avenue is the community center by the duck pond. If you can’t attend don’t hesitate to send a small donation to offset the cost of the facility and the food.

Have a great week and please help us help others through your donations at www.habitacionesparalatinos.org/donate

Week of 4-25-2016 Projects in Process

The trickle down theory of one economic train of thought is alive and well on planet earth however; often times it is something less than a drip. To suggest that the spigot will soon be open is as ambiguous as  the number of entities who touch the water flowing out. For the grassroots non-profit who rely on other agencies generosity or blessings the well runs dry all to often and the only thing that can be done is to wait for rain. We remember fondly the great celebrity and good Samaritan “Prince” who died unexpectedly. His “Purple Rain” is a happy place and happy thing to happen to someone.

For Non-Profits it is the release of grant dollars to complete a project for someone in desperate need of help. For a Non-Profit it is the lifeblood of their existence. For a non-profit it is saying “no can do” to someone needing food, shelter, medicine or a job at any wage. Habitaciones Para Latinos Association is such a non-profit waiting for funds to trickle down from set aside federal government programs designed to help people at grass-roots level. What we to often find is much of the money going to beautify a play ground or a park instead of sealing a roof that is leaking so bad a dozen washtubs can’t catch all the drips. How does this happen? All to often the worst problems rear their ugly heads at a time when funds have already been committed to lower priority projects. Our alternative is to ask for donations directly from friends and family of those in need. When those funds are not sufficient we look to the general public to help and I am sad to say the folks that give the most are most times the folks that should be receiving. Faith suggests God will take care of me if I help take care of someone else. This is the mindset and the heart of most leaders of a non-profit but there is never enough to go around as managing a huge non-profit requires an educated person with special skills and to compete with corporate America the large nonprofits have to pay out huge sums of money to attract leaders. So while United Way has convinced employers to collect donations through their payroll programs and millions of dollars are collected it is still expensive to market themselves and hire great leadership which reduces the purple rain that ends at the grassroots nonprofits and other projects they fund.

This week we insured a reliable washing machine got funded and delivered. We insured all the faucets that were leaking , that had been stopped, are still stopped and are working. For the elderly couple on social security we are working to get some temporary relief from rain coming into there home.

Kansas is under a severe thunderstorm warning today with  chances of tornadoes to the west of the county that could spread right over this elderly couples house. We called on friends, family, neighbors and now we call on you  to help us, to help those who can’t help themselves for what ever reason. No one should live cold and damp in our country and certainly no one in the Midwest where some of the most honorable and hard working people contribute everyday to a better America.  God Bless You and God Bless America. Please give.

Habitaciones Para Latinos Association is helping every person they can but are emotionally connected to the Latino community who have a reputation of not asking for help even when help is available. We are currently made up of volunteers and no salaried employees are in the organization.

Why is the government not helping those in need?

GRASS ROOTS LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS ARE MORE TRANSPARENT AND VISIBLE. SEE THERE EFFORTS IMMEDIATELY WITHIN YOUR COMMUNITY.

PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CHARITIES

It is good for everyone to know that the Federal Government of the United States of America has hundreds of programs in place to help those in need. Working with the 50 States and Puerto Rico. The Federal Government works with State Governments to insure everyone in this country is taking care of if they are not able to take care of themselves. Rules are established to insure all proceeds given out are documented and that no corruption or abuse occurs.

Along with the programs established by government many non-profit organizations have been created that qualify for more Federal, State & Local programs but are also supported by Private Organizations and private donors to further provide support to those in need.

Top 25 Most Successful Non-Profit Organizations in the World

A career in non-profit management can be a very rewarding one. But, often we think of non-profit work as being poorly paid, in part, because the non-profit organization itself is often struggling. And, while it’s true that salary ranges at even the most successful non-profit organizations are never going to match those of executives in highly successful “for profit” organizations, it would be incorrect to say that all non-profits are struggling. In fact, here are twenty five of the most successful non-profit organizations today.

  1. United Way: United Way is a worldwide organization dedicated to helping people achieve their human potential through education, income stability and health.
  2. Salvation Army: When we think of the Salvation Army, most of us think of the red collection kettles that we see outside nearly every store during the holiday season. The Salvation Army helps provide the necessities of life to people all over the world, including food and clothing.
  3. Feed the Children: Feed the Children delivers food, medicine and clothing to needy children throughout the world.
  4. Gifts in Kind: Gifts in Kind is one of the most unique charities in the world. They work with companies who donate their products, rather than cash donations, so that the products can be used where they are most needed.
  5. Americares: Americares delivers medicine, medical supplies and aid wherever there is a crisis. They are always out in front when natural disasters like earthquakes, floods and storms that devastate areas around the world.
  6. YMCA: The YMCA is a large US organization that has a presence in all major cities in the US, and in many small towns, too. The Y works to strengthen the community through education and programs designed to help people grow and thrive.
  7. The Red Cross: The Red Cross is the most significant disaster relief organization in the United States. They respond to disasters worldwide.
  8. Catholic Charities USA: The primary focus of Catholic Charities is reducing poverty.
  9. Feeding America: Formerly known as America’s Second Harvest, Feeding America is dedicated to ending hunger in the US.
  10. Mayo Foundation: The Mayo Foundation is the country’s largest non-profit dedicated to medical research.
  11. The Cleveland Clinic Foundation: The Cleveland Clinic Foundation is a non profit academic medical center, specializing in medical research.
  12. Goodwill Industries: Goodwill Industries is dedicated to helping people earn a living who might otherwise have difficulty doing so.
  13. New York Presbyterian Hospital: New York Presbyterian is one of the country’s most respected medical organizations. It’s also a highly successful non-profit agency.
  14. The ARC of the United States: ARC is devoted to helping people with developmental disabilities.
  15. Mt. Sinai: Mt. Sinai is another highly successful hospital that is non-profit.
  16. Memorial Sloan Kettering: One of the world’s foremost cancer treatment centers, Sloan Kettering is non-profit.
  17. Cedars Sinai: Cedars Sinai, one of the most well known hospitals in California, is non-profit.
  18. Henry Ford Health System: Henry Ford Health System, operates hospitals and health systems all across Michigan.
  19. Boys and Girls Clubs of America: Boys and Girls Clubs are some of the most successful organizations working with at risk youth in the US.
  20. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia: CHOP is one of the most successful children’s hospitals in the US.
  21. Shriner’s Hospital for Children: Shriner’s Hospital provides specialty pediatric care and research.
  22. American Cancer Society: The American Cancer Society is one of the most widely recognized non-profit organizations in the US. They lead the charge in cancer research and education programs.

  24. Children’s Hospital: Children’s Hospital in Boston is one of the foremost hospitals and research organizations for pediatric illnesses.
  25. Planned Parenthood: Planned Parenthood is the leading organization for education about sexual decisions and sexual health.

It’s likely that you recognize most of the names on this list. These are organizations that do good in the global & local community. Do not hesitate to support them too.
